Students boost university town rental markets

Students are boosting the housing markets in major university towns
across the UK, according to a new study.
Propertyfinder.com noted that student towns such as Cambridge and
Southampton dominated June's list of property hotspots for both
buyers and renters, with 16 of the top 20 towns among those looking
to rent also home to universities.
It stated that Cambridge was the most sought-after town
property-wise, beating Oxford into second place "by a wide
margin".
The website found that there has been a 25 per cent increase in the
number of tenants looking for a rental property there in the last
month alone.
Nicholas Leeming, director of propertyfinder.com, said: "This is
the peak time for sorting out student accommodation. Landlords are
looking for new properties and students are looking for somewhere
to live."
According to Accommodation for Students, rental costs now account
for more than 40 per cent of a student's weekly budget, which rises
to 50 per cent for those living in London.
